Starting with small thumbnail sketches, the basic “idea” for the stone is roughed out first on paper and then transferred to the chosen stone.

Stones are chosen for color, shape and size. Now the removal of stone begins using a variety of stone tools.

Once a stone sculpture begins, the stone will often dictate position details of the subject. Now that the subject is clear, the detailed carving and finishing begins.

Roy often varies the finishing of surfaces to create the different colors and textures required for each piece.  The result is a unique stone carving with great detail and complexity.
